First edition of Bernoulli’s
complete works, 1742 in 4
volumes containing nearly
200 writings by the famous
Swiss mathematician Jo-
hann Bernoulli, published
by Gabriel Cramer when
Bernoulli was still living.
“After Newton’s death in 1727, Bernoulli was unchallenged as
the leading mathematical preceptor to all Europe” (DSB). “He
collaborated with Leibniz to produce almost all of the present
elementary differential and integral calculus ... The integral
calculus was published in Johann Bernoulli’s «Opera Omnia»,
which contains all of his
mathematical papers
(Norman). Volume 4
of this copy starts with
p. (3) (including the
title page ); since Nor-
man’s copy also starts
with p. (3) (including
title p.), we conclude
that both copies are so complete. Houzeau-Lancaster

“Il est curieux de voir quelle conception l’empoisonneur Glaser
se faisait de la chimie ...” (Caillet). Dans ce traité, l'on trouve de
nombreuses formules de medecine hermétique.
The work is devided into two books: book 1 briey describes
the utility, denitions, principles operations, and apparatus
of chemistry; book 2 is devoted to a description of medicinal
preparations drawn from the mineral, vegetable, and animal
kingdoms. The section devoted to the mineral remedies is by
far the largest. Little is new in these preparations, although
Glaser displays individual renements of technique. “Due to
his inuence on Lemery, Glasers importance for the develop-
ment of chemistry was greater than the contents of his book
rst indicate” (DSB). “Glaser is remembered for his method of
making potassium sulphate, and to the native salt his name is
attached. It is called Glaserit ... His one book was successful”
(Ferguson). Christoph Glaser was born and trained as a pharma-
cist in Basle, Switzerland. About 1660 he settled in Paris, where
he opened an apothecary’s shop in the Faubourg Saint-Germain.
Here he prospered, becoming apothecary in ordinary to Louis
XIV and to the king’s brother, the duke of Orleans. In 1662 he
was appointed demonstrator in chemistry at the Jardin du Roi
in Paris. “Glaser largely eschewed theory and was content with
a straightforward, concise recital of chemical operations and
recipes. In spite of considerable competition, Glaser’s textbook
enjoyed some success. The fourteen editions recorded between
1666 and 1710 include one English and ve German versions. ...”
